Through his observation of people, Michel Parmigiani senses an affinity created from contrasts. He builds a watch template made of carton and walks around the manufacture, asking the artisans to lend him their wrists for a quick measure. He tests without respite and calculates the ideal proportion, only to put it back to a test on the following wrist. The process is true empirical research. Finally, he creates a reference, adding his signature to a timepiece with universally harmonious proportions.
With a firm stroke, he draws the timepiece starting by the profile of the case. Continuing the outline drawn by hand, he creates a single arc which mirrors the curve of the wrist. The form of the curved lugs perfectly continues that of the case. These lugs are carefully aligned for the most perfect fit, resulting in a pure harmony of gentle rounded forms. Although the rules of its geometry cannot be broken, his task is to turn these maxims into a masterpiece. It is a delicate balance of art and science.
The balance of the geometrical curves creates a fusion between the timepiece and the body. When the palm of the hand is placed over the wrist, the timepiece is almost imperceptible, invisible even. In fact, all the components of the timepiece delicately encompass the curve of the wrist. Now, the timepiece becomes a discreet and loyal companion whose silent presence is always felt.
In traditional watchmaking, the movement has always guided the creation of the case. The heir to this past, rich in knowledge and expertise, Michel Parmigiani is a master of the symbiosis of forms. To truly highlight the precious mechanism, the watch designer must give priority to its needs and work within its constraints to create a delicate showcase in the brand's iconic tonneau shape.
In every significant artefact of our watchmaking heritage, the movement dictates the shape of the object’s final form.Michel Parmigiani
